Ned Kelly, infamous Australian outlaw bush ranger is a polarising figure - on the one hand celebrated as a hero for standing up to tyrannical law enforcement and on the other, a lawless murderer. Taking on the police in this makeshift bulletproof armour would make him a legend, and no Australian has had more biographies written of them than Ned Kelly. He was also the subject of the first ever feature film in the world.
I think of him as a metaphor for Australia, made of two conflicting sides; the tough, convict stock fighting for the everyman, and the other one of law and orderliness, safety and compliance. Australia had over 50,000 years of human settlement prior to British colonisation. Subsequently migrants from all over the world have come to call Australia home, including myself.
The colours on this piece are taken from the Aboriginal flag, the Australian national flag, and the green and gold, the colours under which all Australians are united. All the colours are also present on the South African flag, which is my story down under.
