I Mean… Are You Established
When I first started making art I wasn’t sure how it would be received and whether the ideas I had in my head would translate to be commercially appealing. It was certainly a risk having no background or training in visual arts. After a year of making art I applied for an exhibition which I was accepted into. So I was shitting myself a bit showing strangers my work for the first time and asking for thousands of dollars for my work while feeling a bit of imposter syndrome. We had a meet up with all the artists before the exhibition and the first fellow exhibitor I met asked about my work, so I showed him. He asked me how much I was asking for a particular piece and when I told him he audibly gasped and chortled to which I replied “do you think that is too much?”, to which he very condescendingly replied with a head tilt - “I meeeeean… are you established?” as if trying to explain something complex to a small child. I said no I wasn’t and if I was established the price would be 10x. Well now I was really shitting myself and feeling like an imposter. I had used all my remaining money to enter the fair and didn’t have my next months studio rent so this was sink or swim time. So long story short I exhibited and my work was well received at the exhibition, I sold 3 pieces and the piece that he chortled at sold for twice the price a short while after that.
