Tatanka Iyotake, Sitting Bull. While his Sioux name roughly translates to Buffalo Who Sits Down, Americans anglicised it as Sitting Bull. Sitting Bull led his people during years of resistance against the United States government and in doing so became a legend. In this image he is wearing western clothing which speaks to retention of indigenous heritage within modern society, finding a place and participating, while holding on to and celebrating culture.
